Guided Pathways Expand Opportunity

Easy-to-followguided pathways,course sequences for degree completion, are aligned with requirements for success in employment and at the next stage of education. As an early adopter, Mid is among those leading the implementation of guided pathways in Michigan.

Mid & Wayne State University Partner

Wayne State University (WSU) and Mid Michigan College recently signed an agreement that allows Mid students who follow a prescribed plan of study to transfer up to 82 credits to WSU while pursuing a bachelor’s degree in the Mike Ilitch School of Business, saving between $14,000 and $22,000 in tuition.

Free Online Learning Resources Help Students Save

Mid Michigan College has expanded the availability of open educational resources (OER) to students. OER is defined as textbooks, video content, and other media that are freely accessible, openly licensed, and adaptable for instructional use. Since its launch at Mid in 2016, over 758 course sections have utilized OER, resulting in 15,546 instances where a student did not have to purchase a textbook. OER efforts at Mid have saved students over $1.8 million in textbook costs, and they illustrate Mid’s commitment to providing open access to an education that is attainable, affordable, and excellent.

Zero Cost Degree

The College launched a new Liberal Studies Transfer Z-Degree or Zero Textbook Cost Degree, which allows students to complete their entire associate degree with zero textbook costs by utilizing open educational resources (OER). A Liberal Studies Transfer Degree prepares students to pursue advanced degrees outside of science, technology, engineering, and math fields. Additional Z-Degree pathways are being planned for the future to expand access to lower cost options for students.

Mid Ranked #2 In Best Online Colleges List

Mid Michigan College was ranked #2 in Optimal’s Best Online Schools Michigan List, and offers 10 credentials that can be completed 100% online and over 30 others that feature a significant portion of online coursework. The College also offers a variety of virtual student support services, like financial aid, registration, and academic support, which provide convenient help from knowledgeable team members using the latest technologies.

TRIO Program Extends Funding

In 2015, Mid Michigan College was a recipient of the U.S. Department of Education TRIO Student Support Services (TRIO SSS) grant, and in 2020 successfully applied for and renewed TRIO SSS grant funding for another five years. The grant provides over $260,000 to assist 140 eligible students per academic year. To be eligible, students must be first-generation, low-income, or have a documented disability. The TRIO SSS program supports students who face barriers in achieving their maximum potential with personalized success coaches, academic assistance, career and university transfer preparation, relevant workshops, and educational activities related to cultural exploration.

Recognized For Excellence

MMCC recently received accreditation from the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships, which recognizes the excellence of courses the College offers at local high schools. This accreditation ensures that these courses adhere to the highest standards, so students experience a seamless transition to college. Mid is the first public institution in Michigan to receive this recognition for excellence.

Lifelong Learning

Mid recently increased the variety of lifelong learning classes offered through the College. Upcoming classes include artistic welding, knitting, culinary arts, and much more. midmich.edu/lifelonglearning

Internship Opportunities Expanded

Mid Michigan College recently received $93,500 in Federal Work-Study Grant funds to assist local businesses in offsetting costs associated with hosting Mid students as interns. Grant funds can be used to cover internship related costs, including wages, for internship opportunities that are meaningfully tied to a student’s program of study. This effort is being led by Mid’s Career Center team, and is a shining example of Mid’s commitment to preparing students for real-world work and success.

Industry-Recognized Certifications Continue

Students are earning industry-recognized certifications as part of their skilled trades degrees, which allow students to demonstrate valuable skills to potential employers. Mid has several partner organizations, representing a wide-range of career-fields, that offer industry-recognized skill certifications. Since 2018, Mid has awarded 650 NC3 certifications to students in automotive, heating/air conditioning, automation, and advanced manufacturing programs.

Zero Cost Apprenticeship Readiness Certificate Offered

Mid Michigan College and Michigan Works! partnered in the fall of 2020 to offer an apprenticeship readiness certificate with zero tuition costs for students, tuition was paid in full by Michigan Works!. The certificate could be completed in just one semester and provided five students with skills sought out by employers when hiring and selecting apprentices in modern manufacturing facilities. Both organizations hope to continue offering this opportunity in future semesters.

New Medical Assistant Credential

Mid has a well-respected Medical Assistant associate degree program available at the Harrison and Mt. Pleasant Campus locations, and recently began offering students in the Thumb the opportunity to earn this degree at the Huron Area Technical Education Center. In response to the needs of students and the community, Mid also launched a Medical Assistant Training Credential that can be completed in just 10 months, helping students achieve meaningful employment and financial stability in less time.
