What is your favorite place on our campuses & why?

My favorite place on the Mt. Pleasant campus is the Science Center. There are many cool study aids, students gather there to study and support one another, and our Supplemental Instructors really make a difference in students’ lives. In Harrison, I love visiting Books and Beans because of the staff. They always have a smile and a kind word!

What is your favorite memory at MMCC?

My favorite memories at MMCC are when students introduce me to their families. It is a real privilege to meet students’ children, parents, spouses and significant others. I feel very honored when students choose to introduce me.

What is the best part about being a Laker?

The best part about being a Laker is meeting so many different people. We have students from all over Michigan and from other countries as well. I really love the diversity of MMCC. We all have so much to share and learn from one another.

What is the nerdiest thing you do in your spare time?

Reading. I read 1-3 books each week. I was shocked to find out that 33% of high school graduates never read another book for the rest of their lives! For the record, I do not think its nerdy, but life sustaining. It is my absolute favorite thing to do.

What, or who, are you a “closet” fan of?

I love Internet Celebrity Cats! My favorites include Lil Bub, Chemistry Cat, Grumpy Cat, Colonel Meow, Business Cat, Hover Cat, Maru, Keyboard Cat, and Princess Monster Truck. And you know what? I do not even own a cat – my husband is allergic to them! Wait, maybe this is the nerdiest thing I do in my spare time?!!!

If you could have any one superpower, which would you choose & why?

Time travel! Not so much traveling into the future but mostly back in time – to see historical events firsthand, experience life in different time periods and different locales, to meet people, and to really feel and exist in an alternate place.

What is your favorite place on our campuses & why?

My favorite place on Harrison Campus is Acorn Park. There is a campfire pit, picnic tables, and the atmosphere is peaceful. My favorite place on the Mt. Pleasant Campus is the Atrium. The space is open and has an abundance of sunlight. There are always students interacting—it is a great place to meet other people.

What is your favorite memory at MMCC?

I have many favorite memories at MMCC, but if I had to choose, the memory would be having a student come and get me from my desk to meet her parents. She was the first in her family to attend college, had finished her program, and was picking up her cap and gown for commencement. She introduced me to her parents as the person who assisted her with her education by keeping her from walking out the door her first day. Knowing that I helped her achieve her educational goals meant the world to me.

What is the best part about being a Laker?

The best part of being a Laker is the MMCC community. I have enjoyed MMCC as a student who graduated and as an employee. I appreciate being part of an organization that assists student in overcoming obstacles, making the most of their college experience, and achieving their goals.

What was your favorite toy as a kid?

I did not have toys, my siblings and I made memories together. We had fun playing in the sprinkler, with a blanket over the clothes line for a tent, making forts, spying on each other, going to the park, riding bikes, or sitting and talking to each other.

If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

I would go on a motorcycle trip across the Mackinaw Bridge and the International Bridge through Canada, back down through Washington State and across the United States to Maine. Visiting our children who live across the country in Colorado, Oklahoma, Indiana, Florida, and Georgia.

What is your favorite family vacation?

My favorite family vacation was going camping. We loaded up all of the camping gear and took several additional trips for the bikes and canoes. In the past all six of our own children and at least that many more of their friends enjoyed many camping trips to Trout Lake in Gladwin.

I love the front lobby outside the Center for Student Services on the Mt. Pleasant campus. This area is always alive with people hanging out between classes, eating lunch, or doing homework. It has a true college feel!

What is your favorite memory at MMCC?

When the Mid Mentor team was created, we all met for a day of team building and planning. It felt great to be a part of an amazing team, with people who really care about helping students.

What are three things on your bucket list?

Three things that are left on my bucket list are Visiting to Europe, Getting a Golden Retriever Puppy, and Paddle Boarding in the Ocean.

If you could have any one superpower, which would you choose & why?

If I could have any one superpower, I would have the ability to apparate (like in Harry Potter). This would allow me to live and work wherever I wanted with a very short commute! I could also see the world without spending my life savings.

If you woke up tomorrow as an animal, what animal would you choose to be and why?

I would choose to be my dog. When I leave for work every morning and she’s nested in our bed amongst the pillows and blankets, I think about how comfortable she looks and how jealous I am that she gets to sleep all day. She could at least do the dishes while we’re gone!

Director of Student Mentoring & Retention

I have had the pleasure of being an employee at MMCC for the past 6 years and as a student while I was completing my own undergraduate degree. My background was first in teaching and then in counseling. I live in Mt. Pleasant with my husband and 4 children. To me, the best thing about working in the Mentoring department is getting to help students just like you achieve their dreams. My favorite memories at MMCC are ones where I’ve gotten to see students in the hallways that I’ve met very early on in their careers here (usually while they’re still in high school) and they tell me about how they’re graduating soon or transferring on to a university. Seeing a dream being fulfilled is a powerful thing to witness.
