Mid Michigan College recently announced the launch of a new opportunity tailored to those with a passion for the great outdoors—Expedition Scholars.
Expedition Hunting & Angling Scholars will explore the ways hunting, fishing, land management, media production, conservationism, safety, and promotion of the great outdoors connect through coursework, projects, and storytelling opportunities. Scholars will also promote outdoor heritage by sharing their stories, creating digital content, and managing social channels.
In collaboration with Rusted Rooster Media, a nationally known and award-winning outdoor production company, and other partners, scholars will learn what it takes to excel in a variety of outdoor-related careers, strategies from experts in the field, and how to apply skills they gain from participating in outdoor adventures like salmon fishing, turkey hunting, and more.
“Students often find it challenging to connect their passions to their education and ultimately, to their career. This scholars opportunity celebrates their passion for the great outdoors, offers memorable experiences, and builds relationships with others who share the same passions,” JJ Mertz, Expedition Hunting & Angling Scholars Director at Mid Michigan College.
Students who are accepted into Expedition Scholars program-specific chapters will participate in experiential learning activities outside of the classroom to enhance their education. Students will also make connections with industry leaders in their chosen fields of study. Scholars are selected through an application process, and may also receive scholarships to support their success. In addition to the Expedition Scholars, the College has also launched a new academic pathway, Outdoor Media Transfer. This Pathway can be completed in just four semesters, nearly 50% online, and prepares students to transfer to four-year colleges or universities to pursue advanced degrees related to marketing, media and content creation, and branding in the outdoor industry.
“I’ve been immersed in a career in the outdoor industry for over 20 years and can honestly say I can’t imagine being a part of anything else. The Expedition Hunting & Angling Scholars and Outdoor Media Transfer Pathway will connect students to real-world opportunities that currently exist,” said Jason Brown, Co-Founder and Executive Producer at Rusted Rooster Media. “There’s a true lack of talented individuals who also possess an outdoor skill-set in many areas of the industry, so building a feeder system for outdoor brands, marketing agencies, as well as media and production houses has never been more important.”
As an organization Mid has a history of being committed to and supporting outdoor traditions. This has allowed exceptional connections to develop with leaders throughout the outdoor industry, which will allow students to experience a rich, diverse, and dynamic outdoor-focused education.
Additional pathways related to the outdoor industry are planned for the future.
Registration for the winter semester is available now and courses begin January 11. Prospective students can apply online at midmich.edu/apply or contact Admissions at admissions@midmich.edu or (989) 386-6661.
