Mid’s Computer Aided Drafting & Design (CAD) students tackle real-world projects, turn ideas into realities, and create exceptional solutions using drafting and 3D printing technologies.

Students recently collaborated with faculty from Mid’s Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Program to recreate models of bones.

“CAD 216 and 217 students did a fantastic job creating several additional bone models for PTA faculty,” explained Eric Sander, CAD Instructor at Mid. “The students used 3D scanning and printing technology to duplicate the existing models so more PTA students could have a hands-on experience in the classroom.”

The College also prioritizes connecting students to professionals who are working and innovating in their destination industry.

Students recently had the opportunity to hear from Austin Kantola, a full-time CAD professional who also runs a small business, Genesis 3D Printing, designing and 3D printing plastic accessories for the hunting industry. CAD students were joined by students enrolled in the College’s Hunting & Angling-related programs, including the Outdoor Industry Entrepreneur Program.

“Austin provided our students with an inspiring real-world view of where their education can take them,” noted Sander. “These interactions with industry professionals are invaluable to our students and we appreciate Austin taking the time out of his very busy schedule.”

Kintola shared his thought process behind the launch of products, how different skills combine for success, and managing fast-paced growth as an entrepreneur.

“It was a great experience connecting with students and sharing what I’ve learned,” said Austin. “3D printing is such an exciting field and if you have an idea and the needed skills, the sky is the limit.”
