Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems, sUAS or Drones, are a dynamic, emerging technology that is transforming industries from public safety to agriculture and real estate to photography. Our drone short-term training opportunities take you from learning to fly drones to preparing for your FAA certification.

About Drones

People working in these fields often use drones in their daily work.

  • Real Estate
  • Construction
  • Filmmaking
  • Public Safety
  • Insurance
  • Journalism
  • Agriculture
  • Transportation
  • Energy
  • Telecommunications
  • Education

Hobbyists do not need to have a remote pilot certification and can fly under the following regulations.

  • Under 400’ above ground level
  • Within line of sight
  • Outside of restricted airspace
  • With a flight system weighing under 55 lbs
  • Minimum age of 16 to become certified to fly for commercial purposes (Part 107)
  • Must be registered with the FAA

Commercial Uses Series

Commercial use of drones requires pilots to have FAA remote pilot certification. Prospective pilots can receive this certification upon successfully completing Mid's training and passing the certification test at an FAA-approved facility.

Mid's Short-Term Drone Commercial Users Training is designed to teach drone piloting skills, address various drone systems, identify industry applications, and prepare prospective pilots for certification.

This three-part drone training series includes the following modules that can be taken separately or as a complete series:

  • Intro to Drones for Commercial Users
  • Hands-on Drone Flight Training
  • Drone Pilot Certification Test Prep

Each Drone Short-Term Training module can be completed for a cost of just $395.

Mid’s Intro to Drones for Commercial Users provides a comprehensive overview of the information your organization needs to start using drones safely and legally. Discover the types of flight systems available, drone capabilities, and how to pick the drone best suited for your organization. Develop a deep understanding of how drones can be used in specific business applications and how to apply drone technology to bring efficiencies to your business.

Topics covered in the training include multi-rotor and fixed-wing drone flight systems, maintenance, registration, certification requirements, safety, insurance, industry applications, featured systems (DJI, Yuneec, etc.), emerging technologies, and the latest FAA policies.

Students interested in pursuing FAA Remote Pilot Certification should also complete Mid's Hands-on Drone Flight and Drone Pilot Certification Test Prep trainings. These short-term training opportunities develop piloting skills and prepare prospective drone pilots to successfully pass the FAA Remote Pilot Certification Test.

Upcoming Training Start Dates

Time 8am-5pm

Cost $395

Location Mt. Pleasant Campus | Morey Technical Education Center

Our unique indoor flight training methodology uses model quadcopters (currently the Syma X5C without FPV) flying indoors. By flying indoors, participants do not need to contend with wind or other weather conditions, allowing them to focus solely on controlling the drone. The training progresses through a series of increasingly difficult exercises and culminates with a drone obstacle course at the end of the day. This approach develops three primary skills:

  • Identifying flight system orientation
  • Accounting for depth perception issues
  • Flying without dependency on GPS

These basic skills are easily applied to more advanced drone flight systems, and allow pilots to confidently fly drones in the event of a mission or situational requirement for manual flight control. Training participants receive a training quadcopter with a radio controller.

Students interested in pursuing an FAA Remote Pilot Certification should also complete Mid's Drone Pilot Certification Test Prep training. This short-term training opportunity prepares prospective drone pilots to successfully pass the FAA Remote Pilot Certification Test.

If you have a small drone that is less than 55 pounds, you can fly for work or business by following the Part 107 guidelines. This training covers the Part 107 rules to prepare you for the required FAA Knowledge Test.

Keep up with changing Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements to remain ahead of the curve among drone pilots. This short-term training is specifically focused on preparing prospective drone pilots for the FAA Remote Pilot Certification Test. Successful completion of this test is required for those who plan to operate drones for any commercial or business purpose.

Beyond drone-specific material, participants gain an understanding of much of the ground-school information covered in the FAA’s knowledge test. Topics covered include drone regulations, airspace classification, interpretation of sectional navigation charts, operating requirements, and flight restrictions, aviation weather sources and effects, small unmanned aircraft loading and performance, emergency procedures, aeronautical decision-making and crew resource management, radio communication procedures, physiological effects of drugs and alcohol, airport operations, and maintenance and pre-flight inspection procedures.

The training fee includes a sectional chart, FAA test supplement, 50 FAA sample test questions, and eight hours of instruction. Actual FAA testing must be administered at an authorized testing center and is NOT included in the training fee.

Public Safety Series

Drones are increasingly being used by Public Safety personnel to assess situations on the ground and plan response tactics. Public Safety personnel are required to have FAA remote pilot certification. Prospective pilots can receive this certification upon successfully completing Mid's training and passing the certification test at an FAA-approved facility.

Mid's Short-Term Drone Public Safety Training Series is designed to teach drone piloting skills, address various drone systems, identify public safety sector applications, and prepare prospective pilots for certification.

This three-part drone training series includes the following modules that can be taken separately or as a complete series:

  • Intro to Drones for Public Safety Personnel
  • Hands-on Drone Flight Training
  • Drone Pilot Certification Test Prep

Each Drone Short-Term Training module can be completed for a cost of just $395.

Drones have unique applications for public safety personnel. Drones can put eyes and ears on the ground and in the air in scenarios that would be impenetrable or life-threatening for personnel. This technology has the potential to extend and expand public safety team’s abilities while improving the safety of everyone involved in an emergency.

This 8-hour comprehensive short-term training is focused on providing participants with hands-on experiences to help them translate the potential of drones into action. Participants receive information regarding the impact of drones in the public safety sector, data to facilitate informed decisions during the planning stage of drone implementation, and the ability to maximize their return on investment in a drone program.
