Class Description

In this five week class, you will learn and explore medicinal uses of common herbs. In each class you will be building a preparation that can be added to an herbal first aid kit that you will keep. Tinctures, poultices, body butters, salves, sprays, and herbal vinegars are just some of the items you will be making throughout the series. You will learn firsthand how to prepare the herbs and what you can use them for.


Instructor

Stephany Morgan

Stephany Morgan is an herbalist, professor, and healthcare professional. After earning her BS in Psychology and Pre-Nursing from Rochester College with a minor in General Science, she began her formal pursuit of natural medicine. She went on the earn her MSc in Complementary Alternative Medicine at the American College for Healthcare Sciences, where she focused her studies on Herbal Medicine and Nutrition.

Week 1

Elderberry Syrup

  • 1 ¾ cups water
  • ⅓ cup dried elderberries
  • 1 tbsp ground ginger
  • ¼ tbsp ground cloves
  • ½ cup honey
  • 1 half pint (8 oz.) jelly mason jar

Supplies in bold will be provided by Mid Michigan College to class participants.

Week 2

Garlic Infused Honey & Oregano Infused Oil

Garlic Infused Honey

  • 4 ounces honey
  • 1 head of garlic
  • 4 ounce jelly mason jar
Oregano Infused Oil
  • 2 fl. ounces of olive oil
  • ¼ cup dried, shredded oregano
  • 2 ounce tincture bottle

Week 3

Black Drawing Salve

  • 6 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon Calendula flower
  • 2 tablespoons castor oil
  • 2 teaspoons beeswax
  • 3 teaspoons activated charcoal
  • 3 teaspoons clay (kaolin or bentonite)
  • essential oils: 40 drops
  • 4 ounce mason jar

Week 4

Loose Herbs for Poultice

  • ¼ cup Slippery Elm
  • ¼ cup Calendula
  • 2 tbsp Bentonite clay
  • Water
  • Cloth
  • Plastic wrap
  • Gauze

Week 5

Salt Scrub

  • 3.5 ounces salt
  • 2-2.5 fl. ounces olive oil
  • 4 ounce mason jar
  • Essential oil (see week 3)
