In 2015, Mid Michigan College was a recipient of the U.S. Department of Education TRIO Student Support Services (TRIO SSS) grant, and recently successfully applied for and renewed TRIO SSS grant funding for a another five years.

The grant provides over $260,000 annually for salaries, equipment, supplies and materials, and software to assist 140 eligible students per academic year. To be eligible, students must be first-generation, low-income, or have a disability. The TRIO SSS program supports students who face barriers in achieving their maximum potential with personalized success coaches, academic assistance, career and university transfer preparation, relevant workshops, and educational activities related to cultural exploration. The primary measure of success is degree attainment or transfer to a four-year institution.

Data from the first several years of TRIO SSS at Mid demonstrates that efforts are helping students succeed. Sixty-percent of Mid’s TRIO SSS students persist from one academic year to the next or transfer from Mid to a four-year institution. Eighty-Two-percent of TRIO SSS students at Mid maintained good academic standing, 47% graduate from Mid within four years, and 20% of new participants each year will graduate within six years.

“TRIO SSS students develop growth mindsets, resiliency, and feel empowered to complete their college journeys. We support their academic activities and achievements, and also provide cultural and enrichment opportunities they may not otherwise experience,” explained Mary Battaglia, TRIO SSS Grant Director at Mid.

The College’s TRIO SSS reapplication submission received perfect scores from all federal program evaluators—an exceptional achievement.

“We are so proud! This is a great accomplishment for Mid and a testament to the TRIO SSS team and students,” noted Battaglia.

Recruitment for the TRIO SSS program is going on now. Currently registered Mid students or community members can find more information about Mid’s TRIO SSS grant-funded program at or by contacting Annie Van de Water at or Amy Dykhouse at
