Mid Michigan Community College (MMCC) participated in the 2018 Art Reach of Mid Michigan’s Festival of Banners. Art Reach brings public art to the community by hanging hundreds of banners painted by people of all ages on the light posts in Mt. Pleasant and Shepherd.A contest was held to select an MMCC Student Featured Artist. Students submitted sketches of their banner ideas, and a committee selected the winner.
“This is an exciting opportunity for an MMCC student to showcase their artwork for hundreds to enjoy,” said Carol Darlington, Director of Lifelong Learning.
Submitting the winning drawing this year was Kristie Klein of Mt. Pleasant. Surprisingly, Kristie is not studying art at MMCC but was encouraged by her English instructor to enter the competition. Kristie’s banner is a representation of her time while at MMCC.
“My banner really represents the transformation I’ve undergone while attending Mid. I had become overwhelmed and my life had become stagnant. MMCC helped open my eyes and my mind while I gained the confidence I needed to take action in my life. My time at Mid has shown me that if there is something that I’m not happy with then I need to take the steps to change that,” shared Klein.
Congratulations to Kristie for taking those steps to change her life and for being this year’s MMCC Festival of Banners contest winner. Her art work will be on display in downtown Mt. Pleasant.
According to Darlington, “As long as we have students interested in being an MMCC Featured Artist, Mid will support them by being a part of Art Reach of Mid Michigan’s Festival of Banners.”
