Dozens of area manufactures, educators, and students took advantage of a rare opportunity to experience the Shaltz Automation and Mitsubishi Solutions mobile labs, which arrived in Beaverton recently.
The mobile labs were brought to the area as a result of a partnership between Mid Michigan Community College and local manufacturers. Funding for the visit was made possible with money from MMCC’s National Science Foundation grant, a portion of which supports initiatives to educate area youth about manufacturing and its associated careers.
Visitors of the mobile labs were able to tour them and learn about Mitsubishi’s latest advances in the field of electric automation. The students and attendees watched demonstrations and conducted hands-on exercises in the latest control systems and computer operating systems for robotics, PLC’s (programmable logic controllers), RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), and more. Visitors were awed by the smell-o-vision demonstration, where they could experience the aromas of various foods through a television.
“We’re pleased to bring these types of opportunities to our local communities,” said Scott Govitz, MMCC’s Executive Director of Workforce and Economic Development. “Manufacturing and skilled careers offer significant opportunities for meaningful, well-paying, and local jobs, so it’s important to let our students see firsthand how exciting these careers can be.”
MMCC’s National Science Foundation grant also provided funding to create a Plastics Engineering Technology program at the college. This program was specifically created in response to local workforce openings in the field of Plastics Technology. MMCC’s Plastics Engineering program offers both one and two-year degree options, and the first courses will open this fall.
