Mid Michigan College student, Todd Perkins of Shelby Township, recently received a Head of the Class award from Malco Products, a major tool manufacturer based in Annandale, Minnesota.

Todd also received the Presidents’ Award in the 2018 Student Showcase, for his project that connected many of the concepts taught during the HRA Program. “It was truly a practice in putting knowledge to work,” said Perkins.

Todd also worked for a local heating and cooling contractor, and completed required internship hours while attending classes. Todd had many commitments outside the classroom, yet he made his education a priority and completed his Associate Degree in Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning in just 10 months.

"Todd never missed a day of class during the HRA Program and always arrived early and often stayed late to help students with assignments and complete projects," noted Ron Holmes, HRA Lead Faculty at Mid. "Todd worked as a team player and exceeded all expectations and standards of the program. He is the definition of success."

Since 2005, the Malco Head of the Class program has touched the lives of over 35,000 students representing over 300 Trade Schools and Union Locals across the United States and Canada. Each school term, Malco recognizes outstanding graduates from career education programs. Students are nominated by their program faculty, and winners receive a $400 Malco Tool Kit and a Malco Hat.

“I’m proud of the work I accomplished and the educational opportunities I was able to take advantage of during my time at Mid in the HRA Program,” shared Perkins.

Mid’s HRA lab features heating and refrigeration units for hands-on learning that prepares students to enter the workforce successfully and quickly. This proved true in Todd’s case—ESPEC, a large test chamber corporation based out of Hudsonville, Michigan, hired him before his official graduation date.
