National Apprenticeship Week (NAW), celebrated November 12-18, is a nationwide celebration in which leaders in business, labor, education, and other critical fields demonstrate their support for apprenticeship by showcasing their programs, facilities, and apprentices.
The week-long event highlights the ways in which apprenticeship prepares highly-skilled talent through paid, relevant workplace experiences.
To honor both this year’s NAW theme—Apprenticeships: Creating Tomorrow –and Veteran’s Day, Mid Michigan College arranged for its student-veterans to tour local manufacturing facilities, Morbark LLC (Winn) and Burch Tank and Truck (Mt. Pleasant). The College’s chapter of Student Veterans of America partnered with the Central Michigan Manufacturing Association (CMMA) on the effort.
“This collaboration introduced the College’s veteran population to the manufacturing world. The tours allowed CMMA member businesses to showcase their facilities and job openings to Mid students with military experience,” shared Chris Stanton, Mid’s Veteran Services Coordinator.
Experiential learning opportunities, like apprenticeships, are critical to the College’s ongoing effort to increase hands-on learning opportunities for its students. They also allow companies to diversify their workforce, improve productivity and profitability, standardize training, reduce turnover, receive tax credits, and more.
“Mid pairs students and employers together to create dynamic on-the-job learning experiences,” noted Stanton. “We strive to place students in apprenticeships that connect directly to their field of study and to future careers at local businesses.”
The same day students toured local businesses, Mid also welcomed AT Concessions' Food Truck to campus and offered a free lunch to those with military service. Nearly 30 student-veterans, their dependents, and faculty and staff with military experience took part.
