Academic Support Services at MMCC arranges tutoring, special accommodations, and Supplemental Instruction (SI) as a way to facilitate student success. We also offer test-proctoring services for online and make-up exams.
Tutoring
We offer tutoring for all academic courses offered at Mid. Tutoring is a way to help students with the course content and study skills. Tutoring is normally done one-on-one, but we have offered group tutoring as well as on-line tutoring. Tutoring assignments are based on tutor availability. Drop-in Math and English tutoring is available through the ASC.
One-on-One Tutoring
One-on-one tutoring is a program where the student (tutee) and the tutor meet in prearranged meetings, most likely weekly. A student can have up to one hour of tutoring per each credit hour the class is worth. For example, if the course the student is having trouble in is a 4-credit course, the student is allowed 4 hours of tutoring per week. Tutoring is a helpful way to improve study habits, textbook reading, outlining, note taking, etc.
Group Tutoring
Group tutoring is offered for classes where we have numerous requests for tutoring in any one given class. These sessions aren’t as formal as a SI, but they are held in group form and have elements of one-on –one tutoring. Group tutoring is a way for students to interact and support each other, with the tutor facilitating the learning. It is also helpful as a way to improve study habits, textbook reading, outlining, note taking, etc.
Online Tutoring
Online tutoring and SI have been offered at MMCC in a limited format. Mainly a tutor gives their e-mail address to students and the students e-mail questions to the tutor. The tutor then replies within the day, and they correspond that way. This is especially useful for online classes, as well as classes where the SI may not be able to commit to set hours. We plan on expanding this program in the future.
Supplemental Instruction
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a national program for colleges and universities. This program has been very successful at MMCC. We target high attrition classes, generally science classes, and place a SI leader in each class who actually takes notes and is involved with the class with their students. The SI leader then leads structured SI sessions, weekly. Research shows that a student who attends sessions receives a higher letter grade than the students in the same class who do not attend. These sessions focus on academic content, as well as, study skills. If our budget allows, a SI leader may also help students in the lab components of these classes.
Study Skills
If you are struggling with the complexity of some of your courses, the ASC can help. We have written resources, study tips, as well as, textbook reading strategies.
