The mission of the Math Lab is to provide MMCC students with drop-in assistance with math questions, to provide an alternative learning environment for students taking introductory math courses (MAT 101, MAT 104, or MAT 105) at a slower pace with more hands-on assistance, and to allow higher-level math classes with traditionally low enrollment to be offered in an alternative environment.  Tutoring and supplemental instruction are available through ASC Support Services.

Drop-In Assistance

In much the same way that the Writing Center allows student to “drop-in” and get assistance with any class writing assignment, the Math Lab provides drop-in assistance with math problems from any course.  The Math Lab staff can give you one-on-one assistance or work with a group of students from the same course, if desired. We expect you to have spent some time working on the problem before you come to the Math Lab.  Most students find they learn better when they try to solve something on their own first and then ask for assistance when they are “stuck.”  Drop-in math assistance is available during normal Academic Support Center hours on both campuses.

Introductory Courses

The first three courses in the Math Department (MAT101, MAT 104, MAT 105) are all offered alternate versions through the Math Lab. While the content remains the same as it would be in a classroom, each course is divided into three separate one credit courses. We recommend students take just one of these courses per semester these courses are designed to take students through the material at a slower pace. Currently you work as an individual. Your work is primarily done in the Math Lab. Each course involves homework assignments and tests. We have staff available to help when you need assistance with a problem or a concept. MMCC’s full-time mathematics faculty spend some time in the Math Lab as well to work with students. Video tapes, CD-ROMs, and computer-based training programs are also available to students who are interested. For more information on the specifics of these courses, please drop by the Math Lab on either campus, or click on a link to look at syllabi and homework assignment, (please note these documents are subject to change from semester to semester.)

Higher Level Courses

Occasionally instead of canceling a course with low enrollment MMCC will offer the course through the Math Lab. The class meets at the scheduled time with an instructor, but they meet in a smaller room that is a part of the Academic Support Center. Classes offered in this format generally have a “blended “ delivery of material. Students attend a shorter lecture than usual. They spend time in groups working with and learning from each other, plus they take some evaluations in a computer-bases environment. Recently Calculus II (MAT 225), Calculus III (MAT 226), and Linear Algebra (MAT 230) have been taught using Academic Support Center facilities.
